Biography

I am a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, Canada. I completed my general surgery training at McGill and then went to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto to complete my pediatric surgery training. Encouraged to do transplantation, I then went to Oxford, England and Pittsburgh, USA to do a transplantation fellowship with Professors Peter Morris and Thomas Starzl respectively. During the time in Oxford, I worked with Kathryn Wood on transplantation tolerance, and took this research back to Toronto upon starting my forst job in pediatric surgery back at SickKids. There, I began the first pediatric liver transplant program in Canada, and 12 years later moved to Chicago to start the pediatric liver transplant program at Lurie Children's Hospital and Northwestern University. I am the Robert E. Schneider Chair in Transplant Surgery and the Surgical Head of the Siragusa Transokant Center at Lurie Children's. In addition to liver transplantation in children, my inetersts include the treatment of childhood liver cancer, biliary atresia, portal hypertension surgery and the treatment of congenital portosystemic shunts. We partner with parent groups to advocate for increased organ availability for childrenby promoting the use of split liver transplants, living donor transplants, and using one organ for the transplantation of two children thus decreasing waiting time spent on the list.I have enjoyed training both pediatric surgeons as well as transplant surgeons many of whom have become leaders in their field. I take particular interest in promoting pediatric surgeons to also specialize in transplantation for children.
